Process

Currently I make several distinct bodies of work: Functional and Sculptural Ceramics, Hand-carved wooden utensils, and 2-D works on paper. My ceramic work is made using stoneware clay, white slip, and various pigments applied to greenware, clear-glazed, and fired in a Catenary arch wood-fired kiln. You can see additional information about this process here. In addition to ceramics, I work with wood, carving utensils from greenwood, that is, wood that still has it’s moisture content allowing for easier carving and shaping. Generally I try not to cut living wood and rely instead on storm-fallen trees and branches as well as scavenged yard waste. My 2-D work is focused on using ink, acrylics, and collage to create abstract paintings that focus on spontaneous mark-making, as well as layered and abraded surfaces.
