So, basically everything I use came from recipes that were given to me or I found in some book. Without the generosity of others or their hard work I would not be using these great formulas. For that reason I do not believe in keeping 'trade secrets' or any such nonsense. If you choose to use anything here and get really great results or something totally unexpected I would love to see it . . send some pics! Enjoy!
Clay Body:
Charlie Cummings Red cone 1-3
Redart 60
Foundry Hill Creme 20
XX Saggar 10
Talc 5
Nepheline Syenite 5
Slip Base:
Pete's Basic White Slip cone 04
OM4 40
Talc 40
Nepheline Syenite 10
Silica 10
I add:
Zircopax 2%
Praseodymium 0.5%
Yellow Stain
I find the zircopax and stain help the slip 'beef up' a bit and
stay a warmer tone of white rather than grey at cone 1.
Glaze Base:
Woody Hughes Base cone 04
Gillespie Borate 26
Nepheline Syenite 20
Frit 3124 30
Lithium Carbonate 4
EPK 10
Flint 10
Spodumene 5
This glaze works great with oxides and has amazing color response,
however it is not without its problems and one is that it is prone to crazing at cone 1 if the clay body is not sufficiently tight. Another is that it grows gi-normous
crystals in the raw slop if it gets too cold. The lithium re-crystalizes with a vengence.
If that happens you can microwave them with some of the glaze thinned out and
re-constitute them back in. pain in the ass though!
Sometimes I use a terra sig . .
it's roughly 60% Redart and 40% XX Saggar, run in a
ball mill for a while.
